A new trademark for Eternal Darkness registered by Nintendo of America

Nintendo of America registered a new trademark for Eternal Darkness on 23 July, just days before Precursor Games relaunched their Kickstarter campaign for Shadow of the EternalsShadow of the Eternals is being touted as “the spiritual successor to Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem” and is being executive produced by Denis Dyack (former head of Silicon Knights).

While the timing of the trademark registration and relaunch of the Kickstarter raises some eyebrows, it doesn’t appear — at this stage — as though Nintendo have taken an issue with Shadow of the Eternals or the Kickstarter. If successfully funded, SotE would be available for Nintendo’s Wii U.

What’s more interesting about the trademark registration though is the addition of wording as spotted by Siliconera. Nintendo previously registered the Eternal Darkness trademark in 2010 (the game was released in 2002) and there was much speculation as to whether a re-release was imminent. Nothing ever came of the trademark, but with the new trademark registration there is now new speculation. The trademark registered last week includes the wording “downloadable electronic game programs” and “downloadable electronic game software” which hints at the possibility of a release on the Wii U Virtual Console.

To date, Nintendo have not revealed any plans for availability of GameCube games on Virtual Console.
