Report: The NX could be a Virtual/Augmented Reality machine

Nintendo’s next endeavour, the NX, remains shrouded in mystery, but Digi-Capital is attempting to decipher the possibilities. In a recent post, the publication ponders if the NX will be a Virtual/Augmented Reality machine.

The post takes quotes from various Nintendo personnel and compares them to known facts about Nintendo, its current operating philosophy and future projects. Based on Nintendo’s Blue Ocean strategy for Wii, Digi-Capital extrapolates that the “Nintendo-like solution” for NX could be VR/AR. Digi-Captial also predicts the tech and market will reach $150 billion USD by 2020.

Digi-Captial predicts that NX won’t be as powerful as PS4 or Xbox One, but much like Samsung’s GearVRm, which uses the power of smartphones for VR, will use smartphones thanks to the DeNA partnership. The late Satoru Iwata is quoted saying, “smart devices have the widest reach and…the strongest potential… to connect with the largest number of consumers. We aim to construct a bridge between smart devices and dedicated video game hardware… dedicated video game systems and smart devices will benefit from synergies created between them.”

In summation, Digi-Captial believes the NX will be a less powerful system than either PS4 or Xbox One, but will be optimised for VR without Nintendo investing in dedicated wearable teach like Project Morpheus or HoloLens. Instead the VR solution will be powered by smartphones and harness the DeNA partnership to its fullest potential.
