North Americans facing a 5GB mandatory Wii U system update

North Americans who’ve just purchased a Wii U have returned home to find a mandatory 5GB update is required before they can play online.

Since the update is so large, many are reporting the process takes up to four hours to complete. Worse yet, if the Wii U loses power at any time during the update, it looks like the console will become bricked (aka inoperable).

This update lets the Wii U access online features, visit the Miiverse and transfer data from a Wii… or, in short, has functionality that should have been included in the Wii U unit before it was shipped.

As Australia doesn’t get the console until 30 November, here’s hoping we’ve got updated firmware from the get-go. Considering we already miss out on North American-specific functionality like TVii, it’ll just be another slap in the face if we have to perform a similar update.

Suddenly, Sony PS3 updates don’t seem that bad, eh? Maybe we should all start looking into getting uninterruptible power supplies. You know, just in case.
