Nintendo posts profit for Q1, Wii U sales top 10 million

Nintendo has once again managed to make an operating profit thanks in part to the success of amiibo, while the Wii U has finally managed to sell 10 million units.

Nintendo released the financials for 1 April through 30 June 2015 and while the numbers aren’t incredible — 8,284 million yen ($90m AUD) — they prove that there’s still plenty of life in he company. amiibo was the big winner for Nintendo, selling 90.2 billion yen’s worth ($999.5 million AUD).

The Wii U fared less well, selling only 470,000 units in the period, down from 510,000 in the same period last year. The console’s sales have managed to top 10 million though. The PlayStation 4 sold 10 million units in less than 12 months, while the Wii U took 30 months to reach the same milestone.

Wii U software continues to sell well despite the slow sales of the console itself. Splatoon sold 1.62 million units, making up a third of the 4.55 total units of software sold in the period. Wii U owners now have on average six games for the console. The 3DS managed to sell 1.1 million units in the period, which is a 23% increase on the previous year as well as selling around 8 million units of software.

Nintendo is projecting 3.4 million in Wii U sales for the year, which doesn’t seem doable, but with Super Mario MakerStar Fox and Mario Tennis on the horizon it may have a chance. Unlikely, but possible.
