Next Fatal Frame game co-developed by Nintendo, Tecmo Koei; exclusive to Wii U

According to Famitsu — as translated by Gematsu — Nintendo and Tecmo Koei together announced that they are co-developing the next game in the Fatal Frame series exclusively for Wii U.

The game’s title, a release date or any details regarding plot and characters have not yet been revealed, but Tecmo Koei revealed that the game is just one part of a drive to expand the franchise through various multimedia projects.  A live action film is in development with Kadokawa Corporation and set to be released in Japan this Autumn — Australian Spring — while a comic and novel will both arrive this August.

The most recent game in the series — Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse — was released for Wii in Japan in 2008, but did not receive a localised English language release. Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly was remade for Wii in 2012 and released in Australia as Project Zero 2: Wii Edition while the PS2 version was recently re-released on PSN in North AmericaFatal Frame III: The Tormented was added to the PlayStation Store as a PS2 Classic last October.

With so little information regarding the new game in the series at this stage we can’t yet say whether it will be localised and released in Western regions. We’ll update the story with more news as we have it.
