New Xbox One SDK allows for extra computing power for games

Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry has taken advantage of the Xbox One’s leaked software development kit (SDK) to report on recent changes that allow for more processing power for game developers.

The Xbox One’s SDK was leaked earlier this week by hacker group H4LT in the name of “creativity and research.” Digital Foundry went with motives closer to the latter and found that Microsoft has allowed developers to use an additional processing core for their games.

With the Xbox One’s latest SDK, Digital Foundry found that Microsoft now allows developers to use “50 to 80 percent of a seventh core”. Previously, Xbox One developers were only granted access to six of the console’s eight processing cores, with the remaining two reserved for the console’s operating system.

This “may partly explain why a small amount of multi-platform titles released during Q4 2014 may have possessed performance advantages over their PS4 counterparts in certain scenarios,” Digital Foundry concluded.

Digital Foundry also notes that increase in processing power means Kinect functionality has been greatly impacted in games that take advantage of the seventh core.

Finally, Digital Foundry asserted that the “Xbox One is just as secure now as it was before the leak” of its SDK.
