NES’ Golf on Nintendo Switch is a touching tribute to Satoru Iwata

It appears that the inclusion of the NES’ Golf on Nintendo Switch is meant as a tribute to the publisher’s late President, Satoru Iwata.

Iwata sadly passed away in 2015 at the age of 55.

After discovering that Golf was hidden inside the Switch, the Switchbrew wiki has discovered that the game will unlock for play only one day of the year: 11 July, otherwise known as Iwata’s birthday.

Better yet, you can’t manually change your console’s time and date to play if you’ve ever connected your Switch to the internet.

“The loaded date originates from network-time-sync’d time, regardless of whether the user has it enabled or not,” the wiki has reported. “When the system was never connected to the Internet, it comes from the user-specified date instead. This is loaded from the time service-cmds, with the actual time-sync being handled by NIM.”

It’s believed the game is meant as a type of virtual Omamori. In the physical world, an Omamori is a Japanese amulet that is worn for luck or protection, also remembering those you’ve lost. Golf on Switch feels perfect for the task, considering Iwata himself programmed the title.

Looks like we’ve something to look forward to on 11 July 2018, folks.
