Naughty Dog on the pressures of Uncharted 4

In a livestream event from the GameStop Expo Naughty Dog Community Strategist Arne Meyer shed some light on the pressures the developer felt and continues to feel with Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.

According to Meyer, the announcement of the release date was somewhat of a relief for the team as it gives them a deadline. Meyer said, “I mean, the problem is that if you leave it up to us we’ll never be ready. It’s good to sort of set a deadline. We sort of try to figure out when the right window is, try to guess when other games might be out.”

He said there’s always pressure on developers when developing sequels, but because of both the profiles of Naughty Dog and the Uncharted franchise the pressure was felt even more keenly. In saying that, he did mention that bringing the title to current-gen allowed the team to make the Uncharted they’ve always wanted to make by including ideas and mechanics that weren’t previously possible.

Following the success of “Left Behind” for The Last of Us, Meyer said that Naughty Dog realised it could create meaningful single-player DLC for Uncharted as well. “It worked really well for us for The Last of Us, we thought we could put together a really great piece of content as well. “Left Behind” was a really great addition. It’s one of those thing when talking about Uncharted we said, ‘wouldn’t it be great to make another story DLC?’ ‘Does it fit into the story?’And that sort of thing. I think we rose to the challenge for “The Last of Us” and decided to take another shot at it.”

Meyer also mentioned that the team working on multiplayer is really excited to show of what they’ve created and can’t wait to show fans.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is exclusive to PS4 and will be available 18 March 2016.
