Microsoft suggests that HoloLens is five years away

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella spoke at Salesforce’s customer conference Dreamforce recently and was asked about HoloLens, hinting that it’s still a few years away from being in the hands of consumers.

Nadella said that the augmented reality tech is “really a five-year journey” although Microsoft is hoping to get development kits into the hands of developers in 2016. While it was initially announced to be compatible with Windows 10 and seemed to be coming sooner rather than later, Nadella says HoloLens won’t be available any time soon.

While the gaming applications are exciting, Nadella says that Microsoft will gear HoloLens towards business first because there is a clear market; i.e. architects working in 3D space and the like.
