Metroid: Samus Returns has an extra difficulty that can only be unlocked by amiibo

Metroid: Samus Returns has a special difficulty setting that can only be unlocked by amiibo figurine, Nintendo has confirmed.

Speaking with Eurogamer, a Nintendo rep confirmed that the new Metroid amiibo will unlock a special Fusion difficulty mode. Available after completing Metroid: Samus Returns for the first time, the new difficulty mode will give Samus her suit from Metroid Fusion.

“[This] unlockable content is only unlocked using amiibo,” the rep confirmed.

Moreover, a new Samus amiibo will unlock an extra energy tank for use in-game. Older Metroid-themed amiibo will unlock additional in-game items and features.

Metroid: Samus Returns is a re-imagined version of Metroid II: Return of Samus, available on 3DS this September. The two new Metroid-themed amiibo, shown above, will also be made available at the same time.
