League of Legends is bringing big changes to champion select, social features and ranked play in 2016

League of Legends is about to start its annual preseason shake up where all of the bold ideas that surfaced in 2015 will be thrown onto the live client for players to tear apart.

Preseason always brings changes to champions and items but this preseason Riot Games is popping the hood and retooling the core of their game to improve the players experience.

This all begins with a new Champion Select that allows players to clearly define what role they want to play before they even queue. When a player hits the play button they’re taken to a new screen that allows them to list their main and secondary role preferences. Once they find a game they can then preselect a champion, this is called “pick intent”, to show the other players who they want to play in their role. This “helps your team sort out potential comps and avoid teammate-harming bans.”

Riot is also changing the way ban work too, distributing them across 3 players rather than randomly nominating one to do the banning. All of these changes are geared towards reducing the pregame toxicity that happens far, far too often in League. I can’t tell you how often I’ve seen games totally break down in champion select just because somebody unknowingly banned another main.
