Iwata: We will promote local 3DS multiplayer outside of Japan

Speaking to investors at Nintendo’s third quarter financial briefing, President and CEO Satoru Iwata said that local multiplayer for the 3DS would be a focus for the company moving forward.

Referring to the success of local multiplayer in the Pokémon, Monster Hunter and Japan-only YOKAI WATCH franchises Iwata said that Nintendo will expand the feature outside of Japan to “to further accelerate the expansion of Nintendo 3DS in overseas markets.”

Iwata credits local multiplayer on the 3DS for playing “a significant role in the expansion of handheld gaming systems” and suggests the reasons being are; “it creates a fun environment where users teach one another, games that are actually really fun to play tend to spread by word-of-mouth and for the experience of the super-stable 3D feature of New Nintendo 3DS.”

Whether this means we’ll see more games that allow download play with only one copy of a game or if there will be more options to play locally in addition to on the internet remains to be seen.
