Iwata: NFP will be different from Skylanders and Disney Infinity

Following last week’s investor meeting in which Nintendo announced its NFP figurines, an English translation of the Q&A has been released which provides further details on the proposal.

Vooks reports that part of the Q&A relates to the NFP platform with Iwata giving clarification as to how it will differ from Skylanders and Disney Infinity. “Both video game series are compatible with character figurines and have created an extremely large market for these products,” Iwata said noting that they each have a large market presence with a “huge amount of space allocated at retail stores.”

Iwata says Nintendo’s approach differs from Activision and Disney’s as “[Nintendo’s] primary focus, however, is not to develop software that is compatible with figurines.” Nintendo wants to leverage its IP by making the figurines compatible with games “in a new marketplace and create visibility in stores as a brand.”

According to Iwata the NFP has been in development since last year and it’s hoped that “this could also be one way for Nintendo to utilize its character IP” in a way that appeals to fans and customers.
