Hajime Tabata on FFXV: 60fps would be impossible on consoles

Final Fantasy XV Director Hajime Tabata is currently in Germany attending Gamescom and spoke with Dualshockers about the framerate of the title.

When asked about whether the game was on track to reach 1080p and 30fps Tabata said, “The honest answer to that is that there’s obviously a difference in specifications between the two consoles. Maybe we haven’t fully grasped how to get the full potential of each of the consoles yet. We’re still working on that.”

He added that it would be much easier to achieve a greater fidelity if the title were to be excluisve to one platform or another. “If we were gonna make it just for a single platform, and really optimize the game structure and the technology for the platform, it would be very possible to do that, but because we have to work on that as a multiplatform game, I still can’t quite guarantee that we’ll definitely be able to make that on all platforms.”

Fans who played Final Fantasy XV Episode Duscae may remember the framerate struggled to keep a solid 30fps, but Tabata promises that the main game’s framerate more closely resembles Duscae 2.0.

Finally, Tabata advised that 60fps would be impossible on current-gen consoles due to the open world and real-time combat. He said that to achieve a rate of 60fps would require a high end PC, but that Final Fantasy XV development was being focused on PS4 and Xbox One. The team may consider a PC version, but only once the console version has been released.

Final Fantasy XV will be available for PS4 and Xbox One.
