Freemode events coming to GTA: Online current-gen only; Rockstar reveals the end of support for last-gen editions

GTA: Online is set to receive another update, bringing Freemode Events to the mix, but only if you’re playing on current-gen and PC.

Rockstar announced the update and the mode’s release date as 15 September with PS3 and Xbox 360 support notably absent. Freemode Events don’t require a lobby and will commence every 12-minutes. Players will be see when an event will occur through the HUD and they’ll be a mix of various different types of gameplay.

By taking part in a Freemode Event players will earn both GTA$ and RP. Players will be able to select which events occur with a huge number of variations on each event being available.

When Freemode Events are added to GTA: Online the PS4 and Xbox One will also receive access to the Rockstar Editor.

The lack of updates for the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the title has been clarified in a statement to Kotaku UK.

“[W]e always knew there might be a point where we would reach the technical capacity of what the older generation of consoles can handle as each downloadable update requires additional memory both for assets and for additional scripting.  We have continued to optimize the entire game over time in order to squeeze as much memory as we possibly could out of the last-generation hardware and at some point, continuing to add content for those systems could cause the risk of instability to the game overall.”

While the last-gen consoles will no longer receive major updates, Rockstar will continue to support the title server-side.

Grand Theft Auto V is available now for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
