Overwatch League franchises purchased by NFL, MLB: Report

Blizzard has made six agreements with corporations in the United States, China and South Korea for Overwatch League teams, a report from ESPN suggests.

The sporting site says the a Boston franchise has been secured by the Kraft Sports Group, the same company that owns the NFL’s New England Patriots. The New York franchise is allegedly under the care of Fred Wilpon, the owner of the MLB’s New York Mets.

ESPN also reports that the Los Angeles franchise will be headed up by Immortals Esports. Buy-ins for a team are said to be $20 million USD, paid over time.

ESPN says teams are also being established in Shanghai, China and Seoul, South Korea, though no owners have been named. We’ll report back as more is known.

Overwatch is currently available on Windows PC, Xbox One and PS4. The game is currently in its fifth competitive season; meanwhile, the Sydney leg of the Overwatch World Cup takes place later this month.
