E3 2017: Microsoft moved its press conference to once again open the show

Xbox head Phil Spencer detailed Microsoft’s reasons for moving its E3 2017 press conference to Sunday night, Los Angeles time.

Simply put, Microsoft wanted to open E3, rather than let publisher Bethesda do it with its newly-created press conference.

“I liked opening E3, and I felt when we weren’t opening E3 we were… just in the middle,” Spencer told IGN. “The other platform holders were right behind us, and I felt like, ‘okay well if we’re not getting the benefit of opening E3, we’re not closing….’ It unshackled us to kind of try to go do something else. So we’re gonna try it, we’ll learn.”

The move was also made so Microsoft’s conference could “actually land and not end up in the middle of everybody else’s news,” Spencer said.

“Going on Sunday I think will allow us to tell our story, and it will sit there a little more as opposed to everybody else just instantly following up with their own briefings.”

Spencer also suggested that Microsoft will host a pre-E3 Project Scorpio briefing.

“The plan’s not completely set,” he said, adding, “doing everything at E3 would be difficult.

“I like our E3 show being about games. Cleary we’re gonna talk about Scorpio at E3, but I also don’t want to take up the majority of the time doing all things about hardware. So there’s a balance there. I want it on stage. It’s a great opportunity for us.”

E3 2017 takes place in June. Stevivor will be on hand to report back with all the hottest news.
