The Diversion: The four simple steps to creating the perfect Super Mario level

YouTube user Mark Brown has posted a series of videos dissecting elements of video games in order to show how game design works, highlighting good and bad design in the process.

His latest video explains the design theory behind levels in the Super Mario series, including 3D World and Galaxy.

Brown claims that Super Mario levels are designed with a simple four-step philosophy. First a new gameplay element is introduced to the player before being put to a functional use in the level. The new element is then flipped and used in a totally different way before finally coming altogether as the level draws to a close.
