Dark Souls modder sets sights on Dark Souls II

PC Gamer asked modder Peter “Durante” Thoman — notable for writing the DSfix mod for the PC version of Dark Souls — to weigh in on the upcoming PC version of Dark Souls II which he calls “a better experience than even a fully modded Dark Souls.”

Thoman spends much of his pre-release preview comparing and contrasting the range of graphical options, performance between the two games and the console release of Dark Souls II. He even goes as far as digging into the dearth of assets included with Dark Souls II. Using a few screenshots for comparison, he shows the PC version’s impressive visual leap, particularly when it comes to shadows, textures and character models.

“While it is not quite the (almost generational) leap which was initially shown in previews, Dark Souls 2 on PC is a better experience and a more beautiful game than even a fully modded Dark Souls 1,” he wrote, adding, ” and it also performs well on a wide range of hardware.

Thoman concluded “It adds effects which greatly enhance the visual impact of some scenes, such as dynamic godrays, improves the resolution of environment textures, greatly improves shadow resolution and filtering, and maintains the highly detailed equipment models, textures and ambient specular reflections which were a hallmark of the original Dark Souls’ graphics.”

Dark Souls II is available now for PS3 and Xbox 360 and will be available for PC 25 April.
