Consumer release of Oculus Rift unlikely for 2015

Speaking at an SXSW panel over the weekend, Oculus founder Palmer Luckey restated his confidence that Oculus will be the best VR headset available, but seemed to backtrack on statements made about the device launching before the end of 2015.

Luckey was asked about a release date for the consumer version of the device and said, “We don’t have anything to announce. Now is not the time nor the place, but everything is going well.” A follow up question repeated Luckey’s words back to him that Oculus would be the best VR headset available at any price point and that something would have to go horribly wrong for the device not to launch by the end of 2015.

Luckey responded to the first part of the question by stating, “I still stand by that. I’m pretty confident. But that could change. I’d love for it to change because it means there is something even better out there. But I think that’s unlikely right now.”

He was less willing to be drawn on the release date, “I did say [the comment about the 2015 release date] before we made a lot of changes to our roadmap,” he said. “We’ve expanded a lot of the ambition we had around the product and what we wanted to do.”
