343 Industries’ Frank O’Connor has said on Twitter regarding split screen play on Halo 5 that “if we (343) could do it, we would do it” but development on the feature would be “nontrivial”. The response from O’Connor was drawn from a campaign to return the traditional split screen play Halo is known for to the upcoming Halo 5.
@GreenAssassin24 If we could do it, we would do it. But it is what they call "nontrivial."

Undoubtedly the decision to remove split screen play was a difficult one for 343 Industries, Halo has made its name as a co-op game and a lot of that co-op gaming has been done on the couch with split screen, not to mention competitive multiplayer. 343 has previously said “addressing split-screen specific issues would take focus from building other parts of the game” to justify the removal. Fans are understandably upset about this, as Halo makes the transition to an online-only multiplayer experience.
Halo 5: Guardians arrives 27 October for Xbox One.
