343 and Halo Waypoint to take over (some of?) Bungie’s Halo services from 31 March

It’s the end of an era.

From 31 March 31 2012, all Halo-based services on Bungie’s bungie.net will be discontinued. All current Halo data will be transferred to Microsoft’s internal development company 343 Industries at that time.

In the words of Bungie, “all live Halo data will be managed by 343 Industries, and Bungie will no longer be able to update game stats and player service records, to host new user generated content, or to operate the Bungie Pro service.” In a somewhat alarming statement, Bungie mentioned that “any replacement functionality” will be hosted by 343’s Halo Waypoint (halo.xbox.com).

Now, it’s fair to say that Bungie can’t speak for 343, but “any replacement functionality” sure doesn’t mean the same thing as “all replacement functionality.” While we would be very surprised if all of Bungie’s toolsets weren’t replicated in Halo Waypoint, we’ve no guarantee of that at the current time. We’re reaching out to 343 Industries and Microsoft for clarification.

It’s a pretty logical assumption that you should expect an update to the Waypoint website, as well as the Windows Phone and iOS Waypoint apps, on 31 March.
