“What did you expect?”: CD Projekt Red’s Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz on a love-hungry Geralt

First off, minor-major spoilers.

Sitting down with CD Projekt Red’s Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz, Principal Narrative Designer, at PAX AUS last week, I couldn’t help but immediately talk about the way my poor Geralt was unlucky in love in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Actually, scratch that — not unlucky in love, ’cause he did quite well up until a point… when Yennifer and Triss made him pay for romancing them both over the course of the game. It’s safe to say the pair weren’t so happy about your courting habits.

“Why did you do that?” he asked, quite seriously… before breaking into a laugh. “What did you expect? You thought they [Yennifer and Triss] would never know?”

“In The Witcher 1, you had the structure where you had to pick one [character to romance], and it would exclude the other one,” he explained. “But, we thought that was quite artificial, so we gave the option to romance both, because you might want to do it. Players might want to be with both of them.

“But come on! There are always consequences, and that’s what happened with this.

Can’t argue with that logic.

“What would happen in real life, if you did that? Something like this, especially if they [the people you romance] meet at some point,” Tomaszkiewicz continued.

Stay tuned for more with Tomaszkiewicz from PAX AUS. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt‘s “Hearts of Stone” expansion is available now on Windows PC, Xbox One and PS4.
