Naughty Dog’s Arne Meyer on narrative and what drives Drake in Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End

The Uncharted series has always had a strong focus on narrative, but protagonist Nathan Drake is still largely a mystery to players. While Uncharted 3 revealed some of his history, Uncharted 4 is set to show players a whole lot more about the intrepid adventurer.

Speaking with Naughty Dog’s Arne Meyer at PAX AUS, I mentioned how we still didn’t know all that much about Drake and wondered if we’d learn more in Uncharted 4, especially considering that this may be the last time we see him as the series’ star.

“We’re definitely setting it up that way. As you mentioned, Uncharted 3 was starting to peel back Drake’s layers and you’re finding out that he has secrets. Not just that you as a player don’t know, but secrets that his associates and people that are close to him don’t even know. That sets up a really interesting point of narrative tension for us.”

Uncharted 4 will be available next March on PS4.
