New Killer Instinct developer Iron Galaxy was almost the original dev

Following developer Double Helix’s purchase by Amazon and Divekick developer Iron Galaxy’s subsequent takeover of Killer Instinct duties it’s been revealed that both devs were in consideration to develop the game right up until the final decision was made.

In an interview with USGamer, Iron Galaxy CEO Dave Lang said that despite not being privy to all details of the decision he knows that both Iron Galaxy and Double Helix were considered for Killer Instinct. When Iron Galaxy were not given the game to develop Lang recalls, “While it was disappointing at the time, if you take a look at where we were at that point versus the final game Double Helix was able to make, I firmly believe we would not have made as good of a game as Double Helix did – in terms of available resources, we simply weren’t there at that time.”

Part of the reason why Microsoft may have chosen to go with Double Helix and why Lang belives his company would not have created as good a game is due to Iron Galaxy already being tapped by Microsoft to develop Wreckateer. With part of the team hard at work on Wreckateer there was simply not enough resources. Lang admits now that developing Killer Instinct is, “sort of like dating someone’s ex-girlfriend.”

Killer Instinct is available for Xbox One.
