Wooden Spoons: The worst and most disappointing of 2016

Ah, our favourite part of Stevivor’s Game of the Year celebrations: the wooden spoons.

Yep, plural. There’s a lot to be unhappy with this year. Let’s get to it, in no particular order.

No Man’s Sky

Where to start with No Man’s Sky? Sure, it was ruled in the UK that Hello Games and Sony didn’t misrepresent the sci-fi exploration title, but it certainly didn’t live up to our expectations. Reviewer Jay even said that the game’s massive Foundation Update didn’t fix things.

We’ll chalk this one up, ultimately, to a bunch of broken promises coupled with absolutely zero delivery.

Mighty No. 9

Mighty No. 9, the spiritual successor to Mega Man was plagued by delays, and in the end, couldn’t live up to the expectations it placed upon itself.

Our very own Matt summed it up quite nicely — developer Comcept spent more time apologising for missed commitments than it did actually creating the game.

EA and Titanfall 2’s release

Let’s put this out there first: Titanfall 2 is an amazing game. An amazing game that EA put out to die.

Releasing Respawn’s sci-fi Call of Duty killer alongside DICE’s powerhouse Battlefield 1 was not only horribly damaging to Titanfall 2, but presumably to EA’s bottom line. Even when all parties involved tried to convince us otherwise. EA should rightfully suffer for this.

Seriously, though — go and buy Titanfall 2. It’s great.

Mafia III

If nothing else, Mafia III is proof positive that games that aren’t ready should be delayed.

2K and Hangar 13 didn’t get that memo, and Mafia III — despite being a best-seller for 2K and parent company Take-Two — was a buggy mess. We didn’t rate it very highly, much to the chagrin of Take-Two.

Quality control, people — let’s get on it.
