Nintendo Switch: New patent suggests the console will support virtual reality

A new Nintendo patent suggests that the Switch will support virtual reality (VR) play.

As spotted by NeoGAF user Rösti, a patent for a “HMD (head mounted display)” accessory has been filed.

The HMD itself looks to function like similar VR offerings from Google and Samsung. The core Switch console would be placed into the HMD and then worn by a player.

The patent continues to state that the HMD would make use of the Switch’s detachable Joycon controllers for play.

Moreover, the patent says that the “present embodiment” of the Switch would use its acceleration and angular velocity sensors in order to track head movement. It continues to detail those sensors would be part of the HMD rather than the Switch itself.

The patent, published today, was filed back in June 2016.

We’ll have more as it’s known.
