Nintendo: “A strong, tough Kirby” is more appealing for North American audiences

In an interview with GameSpotKirby: Triple Deluxe Director Shinya Kumazaki has revealed why Kirby always looks angry on North American boxart compared to the happy, carefree version found in Japan.

Kumazaki explains, “For the Japanese versions we are, at HAL, involved in everything throughout development, including the package design.” He adds that in Japan, ” The most powerful image of Kirby is that cute image, we think that’s the one that appeals to the widest audience.” “[W]e know there is a serious side to Kirby as well,” he continues but believes that “Kirby’s cuteness is his biggest draw in [the Japanese] market.”

According to Kumazaki, Nintendo of America is in charge of promotional materials in North America and that “feedback and insight” provided to him from NOA region prefers a “strong, tough Kirby.” Kumazaki is quick to note that Kirby’s look will be based on the game and points to the box art for Kirby Super Star Ultra and Kirby: Triple Deluxe which both a tough, angry looking Kirby in Japan and America.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe is coming exclusively to 2DS and 3DS 17 May 2014.
