Team17 announces “environmentally friendly” Worms NFTs

Please, can we just stop all this?

Team17 is the latest gaming entity to break into the world of non-fungible tokens (NFTs), announcing a range of “environmentally friendly” NFTs based on its popular Worms franchise.

The initiative, called MetaWorms, will offer NFTs secured on the blockchain and will represent the entire 26 years of the Worms franchise. Team17 claims the NFTs are “environmentally friendly”; 100,000 NFTs can be minted through the Etherium sidechain at the same energy expenditure as 11 UK household’s annual kettle usage, according to the publisher.

Speaking with Eurogamer, Team17 asserted that the NFTs will not be attached to an actual Worms game in any way.

“Team17 is licensing the Worms brand to our newest third-party partner so they can produce collectible digital artwork based on one of the most beloved IPs in indie games, in a similar way to already available physical merchandise,” a representative said in a statement. “Team17 has no plans to introduce NFTs or play-to-earn NFT mechanics into any of its indie games label titles.”

Players have already taken to social media to register their displeasure with the announcement.

Team17,” wrote Daniel Learmouth. “I have a question: who the hell asked for this? This is disgraceful, and by the way: there is no such thing as an ‘environmentally friendly’ NFT; if NFTs are environmentally friendly, then so are lithium mines. Please reconsider.”

My condolences to all the indie developers published by Team17 who now have to deal with being associated with this dumpster fire,” added Wanderbot.

Ubisoft has also announced a range of allegedly environmentally conscious NFTs under its Ubisoft Quartz labelStalker 2 developer GSC Game World announced plans to add NFTs to the title before removing them after fan backlash.

What do you make of Team17’s decision to jump into the world of NFTs?
