PlayStation 4 is finally getting external hard drive support & custom wallpapers

Sony will finally add external hard drive support for games and apps to PlayStation 4 in the 4.50 system update.

Up until now, the PS4 has only allowed expansion through upgrading the internal hard drive. Whilst it’s a fairly easy DIY prospect and removes the clutter of another device in your entertainment setup, fans have long requested the option of external HDD support.

The advantages include being able to add to existing storage space, rather then only replace it, and easily copy games between two or more consoles. An external HDD removes the hassle of having to redownload all digital content, as is the case when replacing the internal drive — plus it’s even faster and easier to do.

All models of the PS4 are compatible with USB 3.0 external hard drives up to 8TB in size. Games and applications can be saved on what the system calls Extended Storage, and appear the home screen exactly like content stored internally. All local game saves are still stored on the internal memory, regardless of where the game is stored.

The version 4.50 system update (codenamed Sasuke) is rolling out to beta program users next week. It also adds custom wallpapers, such as screenshots, a new version of the quick menu introduced in the last major update, simplified notifications and the ability to watch 3D Blu-rays through PlayStation VR.
