Microsoft partners with Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo to bring VR to Windows 10

Earlier today, Microsoft announced partnerships with Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo that will bring virtual reality (VR) headsets to Windows 10.

All headsets offered as part of the partnerships will sport “inside out six degrees of freedom sensors,” meaning they won’t require an extra camera accessory like HTC Vive, PlayStation VR or Oculus VR.

The headsets will work with the newly announced Windows 10 Creators Update.

“Unlike every other virtual reality headset in the market today, there will be zero need for a separate room and complicated setup,” said Windows and Devices Group’s Terry Meyers.

“While the less immersive VR accessories today cost more than $500, or require a new expensive device, these accessories will start at just $299 [USD] and work with affordable laptops and PCs.”

Xbox One compatibility was not mentioned in the announcement, though the console’s next iteration, Project Scorpio, should support VR.

These specific headsets are expected in Autumn 2017.
