Dominic Purcell on Legends of Tomorrow’s Heat Wave: “He’s a hero”

Earlier in the year, Stevivor had the opportunity to sit down with Dominic Purcell, Mick Rory (Heat Wave) on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, to discuss season one of the show.

Legends of Tomorrow offered Purcell the chance to again work with Prison Break co-star Wentworth Miller, who plays Leonard Snart (Captain Cold).

“With Wentworth it’s just a complete trust; complete understanding,” Purcell said of the partnership. “And there’s no feeling-up process. I mean, we’ve worked with each other for — well, Prison Break — and we’ve known each other for close to 12 years now. And we’re very close, good friends, and that enables us to just relax.”

Purcell and Miller worked as a villainous pair on The Flash before becoming regulars — and anti-heroes — on Legends of Tomorrow.

“People have often spoken about the chemistry between Wentworth and myself. I mean, I can’t articulate it, but I think it’s one of those things,” he said. “It’s an accidental surprise really. It just works. I mean, you guys are probably in a better position to — you know, it just works.”

It’s a good think it works. The heroes-yet-villains theme was a major part of Legends of Tomorrow‘s first season.

“I think he’s a hero,” Purcell insisted of his character. “I think he’s a survivor and that’s what I admire most about him. You know, he’s lived a very traumatic past. You know, he burned down his parents’ house and they died in it, so he’s been living with that guilt forever and for a long time. Instead of killing himself, he managed to, you know, find a way to kind of get through life.

“Obviously it’s not an atypical heroic path. I mean, I’m not — for one he’s — you know, he’s a criminal in the true sense of the form, in the true sense, but, you know, there’s a lot of redeeming qualities about him. I think we can see the humanity in him trying to kind of leak out of there. I’m not playing him like a complete psychopath say like Hannibal Lector in Silence of the Lambs. He’s nothing like that. He’s struggling with what he is, and he’s doing everything and anything he can to kind of just get through the day, and I think that’s one of the things I like about him most.”

Stevivor’s currently running a contest that’ll net you the first season of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow on Blu-ray, alongside the second season of The Flash and the fourth season of Arrow.
