Former Chief Xbox Officer Robbie Bach recently told IGN that the Xbox 360 was going to be called the Xbox 3 instead.
“Certainly Xbox 3 was actually on the list because, well, you’ve gotta catch up,” Bach said. “You don’t want to be Xbox 2 compared to PlayStation 3. We actually talked about that.”
The skip from the first Xbox to Xbox 3 didn’t feel unnatural, Bach said. After all, Microsoft has recently done that with the Windows OS, moving from 8 to 10.
“You don’t want to feel like you’re a generation behind, so why not skip?” Bach continued.
In the end, the console became the Xbox 360, using the circular imagery to cite a revolution in gaming.
Microsoft’s most recent console, the Xbox One, got its name as it was designed to be an all-in-one entertainment centre.
