In-depth: Bethesda’s Doom chainsaw sculpture in Melbourne’s ACMI

Melbourne’s ACMI at Federation Square is the temporary home of a spectacular Doom chainsaw sculpture.

Needed to be seen in-person to truly be appreciated, the detailed, towering Revenant took chainsaw carver Rob Bast over 150 hours to design and create. Near its completion, Bast spent fifteen hours a day carving and detailing the demon.

All up, the Revenant is a combination of ten different carved pieces, each sculpted with nine different chainsaws. The smallest of those is being displayed with the carving right now; larger tools went “right up the MS 880, which is the biggest saw that STIHL makes; the biggest production saw in the world,” Bast said.

As you might expect, the bigger saws were used to get rid of unnecessary chunks of wood, while the smaller saws were used to detail the Revenant.
