Nintendo President reaffirms commitment to Wii U

Speaking with Time, Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima has confirmed continued software support for Wii U despite the upcoming Nintendo NX release. Kimishima said “we need to make sure that they (Wii U owners) are satisifed with their purchase and continue to enjoy playing on this platform”.

In a wide ranging interview Kimishima also lamented Amiibo being more collectors item than game enhancement tool, distanced the NX from the Wii and Wii U hardware and commented on Nintendo’s move into the mobile and online space.

While it is easy to say the company will support the Wii U going forward, facts are there are only about 10 million of them in the wild and there is little history of companies supporting such small user bases once the next big thing arrives. We’ll find out by this time next year whether Nintendo has delivered on this statement.
