Here’s why XCOM 2 won’t be available on Xbox One or PS4

A console boy, I found myself drawn to XCOM: Enemy Unknown and Enemy Within like a junkie to crack. So, imagine my surprise when I found out that 2K and Firaxis games were only planning their sequel, XCOM 2, for Windows PC.

Previewing the title in Sydney last week, I had the chance to ask Art Director at Firaxis, Greg Foertsch, why a console release wasn’t planned.

“Unanimously, we wanted procedure. The procedural nature and how we were going to structure it went hand-in-hand with [PC],” Foertsch said. “At the time, the new consoles weren’t out, and modding on a console, well, still hasn’t been done, really.”

Foertsch was of course referring referring to Bethesda’s plan to make Fallout 4 mods available on both Xbox One and PS4. He mentioned that he and Firaxis have an eye on how that progresses.

“We’re watching that closely. For multiple reasons, both personal professional,” he admitted. “I’m very excited and curious to see if it works.”

While Foertsch couldn’t possibly confirm a future console release for XCOM 2, he at least conceded Firaxis was open to the idea.

“We want as many people to play as possible, of course,” he said.

XCOM 2 will be available as a Windows PC exclusive from 5 February 2016.
