There are a total of five mystical power-ups in Uncharted 4’s multiplayer

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End’s multiplayer is a little different to those featured in Among Thieves and Drake’s Deception. Taking its queues from The Last of Us multiplayer, Naughty Dog is focusing more heavily on a team-based experience, but one of the most interesting and exciting changes is the addition of mystical power-ups.

In Uncharted 4’s multiplayer, players will have access –via the in-game store — to purchase powerups on the fly. By getting kills, KOs, revives etc, players earn currency which can be spent on more powerful weapons, grenades and the mystical power-ups. So far three of the total five power-ups have been revealed. Speaking with Naughty Dog’s Arne Meyer at PAX AUS, we learned a little bit more about these mysticals and what they mean for multiplayer.

“With the supernatural power-ups in multiplayer, we’re taking inspiration from all three Uncharted games. So we have the El Dorado from Uncharted which shoots out fiery explosions and tags enemies, the Chintamani Stone from Uncharted 2 which can heal your teammates in an area and the Djinn from Uncharted 3 which lets you teleport short distances, giving you the opportunity to flank your enemies or escape a tough situation,” Meyer explained. He also noted that the Djinn will make your character more powerful, so rather than taking three melee hits to kill an enemy, it will only take two.

So with five total mysticals in the multiplayer and only three previous Uncharted titles, Meyer was obviously cagey when I asked him about the other two. “The two other mysticals that we haven’t revealed yet aren’t as closely tied to the Uncharted world. Obviously there are only three previous Uncharted games, but two more mysticals out there.”

While it seems obvious that one of the remaining two will relate in some way to Uncharted 4, what the fifth could be is a tantalising mystery. Looking back at Naughty Dog’s library of titles the most likely to draw inspiration from is The Last of Us as it most suits the Uncharted aesthetic, however every Uncharted title has included the mysterious relic from Jak & Daxter. While we wildly speculate, let us know what you think.

What other power-up would you like to see?

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End will be available on PS4 from 18 March 2016.
