Naughty Dog’s Arne Meyer: The power of the PS4 lets us do things in Uncharted 4 we never could before

The Uncharted series is known for it’s action and over-the-top set pieces. Like an action film franchise, each successive title is more ambitious, explosive and bigger than the one that came before it. During PAX AUS, I asked Naughty Dog’s Arne Meyer how the developer has stepped up Uncharted 4 as compared to Uncharted 3.

Meyer was candid in admitting that continually trying to outdo yourself is increasingly difficult, but revealed that Naughty Dog is tackling the problem in creative ways and using the power of the PlayStation 4 to accomplish it. “I think there are two different philosophies when making an Uncharted. One of them is realising that it’s really hard to keep topping ourselves because that eventually has diminishing returns.

“It’s like, ‘how much more outrageous can you be?’ But I think we’ve found ways to create really good, over-the-top set pieces that are at least equal to what you saw in the previous games. If not more so because we’re able to do a lot more with the power of the PlayStation 4.”

Meyer used the E3 demo as an example of gameplay in Uncharted 4 that was both previously not possible and also pushing the franchise forward. “If we look at that sequence; he’s on a rope that’s swinging around, he’s shooting from that rope and it’s attached to a truck that’s separate from what’s happening in the environment. Those are three things that in the previous games could have only been done decoupled from each other, but now we’re able to combine all of those elements in one sequence.”

He also said that that demo was only a small look at what Uncharted 4 has in store for fans, “That E3 demo is actually an excellent example of how we’re able to combine all of these elements that we’ve never been able to do before. Just looking at that you’re able to see glimpses of how we’re pushing the games forward and what we’re trying to do with the gameplay.”

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End will be exclusive on PS4 from 18 March 2016.
