Mass Effect fans think they know the name of Andromeda’s protagonist

Mass Effect fans have banded together to surmise the name of Andromeda‘s main character.

There are multiple clues as to the protagonist’s identity in the game’s N7 Day trailer. First up, eagle-eyed fans have spotted a dog tag in the trailer (see below) that reads either Ryder or Rider.

Add to this the song playing in the trailer — Johnny Cash’s “Ghost Riders in the Sky” — and it looks like we’ll be playing as a character named Rider.

Reddit user Benelioto, who spearheaded the investigation, thinks Rider fits. In the Mass Effect trilogy, hero Shephard was named after the first American man in space, Alan Shepard. Benelioto thinks Rider will be in reference to Sally Ride, the first American woman to make it to the final frontier.

BioWare hasn’t made comment on the theory, though Studio Director Yanick Roy did confirm that the trailer’s song was chosen for a reason:

Mass Effect: Andromeda is expected in 2016.
