Sony: We were “caught by surprise by the positive reaction” to Until Dawn

It should come as no shock, considering the apparent lack of marketing and support from the publisher, but Sony was genuinely surprised by the success of Until Dawn.

Sony Worldwide Boss Shuhei Yoshida spoke with Eurogamer and admitted the positive reaction to the interactive drama was unexpected. This has spurred Sony on to increase marketing for the title, over the holiday period.

“We’re super happy with the reactions from people, especially people who are streaming or posting videos on YouTube,” he said. “It’s super fun to watch other people play, even after you’ve finished the game, because other people make different choices.”

Yoshida went on to say that due to Until Dawn’s success, Sony is looking at future releases in the genre which it beleives can expand the PS4’s user base. “I think everybody was caught by surprise by the positive reaction. That’s a really great thing for the future of the interactive drama genre. We’re a big fan of this genre. These games can talk to a broader audience. You don’t have to be good at playing games. You can even just watch your friend play the game.”

We scored it 8/10 and wrote “Until Dawn is a hugely enjoyable piece of entertainment. I’m hesitant to call it a game, because while it clearly is one it straddles other forms of entertainment simultaneously. Its claims of a massively branching and divergent narrative are hugely overstated, but while playing, the potential for such is palpable.”

Until Dawn is available exclusively for PS4.
