Watch: The Witness gets a release date and creator Jonathon Blow teases some puzzles that may be almost unsolvable

In an interview posted on the PlayStation Blog with Braid creator Jonathan Blow, he talks about his new game The Witness.

According to Blow, to get 100% completion in the title players will need to spend somewhere near the 100 hour mark and even then he’s skeptical that everyone will achieve 100%. Blow suggests that some of the puzzles in the game are so difficult, most players won’t solve them. He also says that he hasn’t cut anything for being too difficult, only for being not very good.

“Usually if I cut things it’s just because I don’t think they’re very good. I’ve cut hundreds of things from the game. Usually I cut them early — I start experimenting with something and decide I don’t like it. But there’s at least one puzzle in the game right now that almost nobody — like 1% of players — will ever be able to figure out.”

Announced five years ago, the PC/PS4/iOS title is nearing completion. So close in fact that it actually has a release date now, alongside a brand new trailer.

The writer on the PlayStation Blog claims to have played 50 hours of The Witness and only managed to solve 388 of the 600+ puzzles in it. Blow goes on to say that he wants players to have their own experiences with The Witness, “It’s so big and complicated… they can take away what they want, honestly. The design of the game is about giving people the freedom to approach it in their own way. I’ve spoken of some thematic things and what the game is about, and to what degree people get that will differ from person to person, and that’s totally cool. Which types of puzzles people like is going to be different, and that’s totally cool.”

The Witness will be available for PS4 on 26 January 2016.
