E3 2015 Preview: Resident Evil 0 HD

Resident Evil 0 is getting the same treatment as the Resident Evil remake, and I couldn’t be more excited.

The GameCube classic is getting a facelift, with new textures, lighting, modernised controls and display settings. The finished package will yet again be another reminder of the Resident Evil of the past, an atmospheric title with mystery, confusion and most of all, terror.

In the hands-on demo at E3, I was able to take control of S.T.A.R.S. agent Rebecca Chambers at the very opening of the game, beginning on a train infested with zombies, dogs, and the recently-escaped convict, Billy Coen.

The performances of the game’s original voice actors have been retained, but you’ve never seen Rebecca or Billy like this before. Optimised in HD, they’re able to convey more emotion than ever before. Or, as much as they can muster, because RE0 is, of course, a shlock-fest. In the best possible way, of course.

I didn’t get to see any of the game’s signature character swapping, but I progressed far enough in the game – the demo only went up to the game’s first mini-boss – to unite Rebecca and Billy. The newly-revamped control scheme from Resident Evil HD has been implanted in RE0, so say goodbye to tank controls and hello to the future. Billy can also be controlled using your controller’s right stick.

The thing that impressed me most with the re-release is the way that lighting can really change everything. Bolts of lightning were accompanied by crashing thunder, and one actually made me jump in surprise and wonderment. As I climbed on the speeding train’s roof, right at the end of the demo, I was very impressed to see lightning effects paired with sound and rain to produce a magical, yet harsh, setting. The game’s pre-rendered backgrounds have never looked so good.

If Capcom uses the same strategy with RE0, it’s really hard for them to go wrong. These two (formerly) GameCube era titles were highly polished to begin with, and work well in the current day.

Resident Evil 0 HD is scheduled for an early 2016 release on Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4 and Windows PC.
