Disney Infinity 3.0 aims to be a little nicer to your wallet

Sitting down in Melbourne with Disney Infinity 3.0 Main Producer, Mat Solie, I had cash on the mind.

More specifically, the amount of cash that die-hard fans would be laying out when the game hits retail shelves.

Despite this iteration’s improvements, it’s sometimes difficult to explain to parents why yet another year means another set of gear to buy. I asked Solie what his best sales pitch was to those who questioned having to buy yet another Disney Infinity Starter Pack.

“That’s easy: you don’t have to buy a new Starter Pack,” Solie began. “This time around, we’re making sure to make the game available digitally from day one. You get the Toy Box, and you can use your bits from Infinity 2.0. The only exception is that you can’t use the reader from Xbox 360 on Xbox One, because there’s a weird chip in there that won’t work.

“Apart from that, you can a la carte it; you can use what you have and go and buy a Play Set when you’re ready.”

Moreover, the notion of “blind” Power Disc packs has been abolished, which means those who want to buy Discs will be able to exactly what they’re getting instead of a lucky dip. Compared to $5 Animal Crossing amiibo card packs, Disney Interactive looks like a pretty thoughtful company after your hard-earned.

Finally, and unlike Marvel characters in Disney Infinity 2.0, any Star Wars character will work across any Star Wars Play Set. Luke will work in Clone Wars-era sets, in the classic offerings and in The Force Awakens releases as well. The model seems less restrictive than ever before. And thankfully, a little more friendly to gamers’ wallets.

Disney Infinity 3.0 arrives on 3 September for PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Wii U, Windows PC and mobile.
