Phil Spencer: Xbox needs “to do better” in Europe

Xbox Boss Phil Spencer has admitted that the brand needs “to do better” in Europe while speaking in an interview with EDGE magazine (via Videogamer).

Part of the reason why Microsoft is holding its first press conference at Gamescom in a number of years is to increase its profile and improve its image in the eyes of European gamers. “I’m excited about going to Gamescom at the beginning of August, having another press show where we’re able to show games that we didn’t show [at E3],” he said. “So you’re going to see brand new games, as well as obviously some repeats. From a product standpoint, I like where we are. I think the team’s doing a great job with the games and building a platform for gamers.”

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe President spoke with VG24/7 recently and revealed that PlayStation has a market share between 70-90% in Europe which isn’t lost on Spencer. “Sony does a really good job in those markets, and they have a long history – long before we were in this business – and they’ve earned the success that they get in those regionsm” Spencer said. “I watch what they do because they do a lot of good things, and I want to make sure that we’re being smart about succeeding. And there are places like Latin America where Xbox does really well, and in the US the numbers keep going back and forth – it’s good competition which I think is good for everybody.”

Major Nelson announced yesterday that Xbox’s Gamescom press conference would be held at midnight 5 August AEST. The briefing will include new looks at Scalebound, Crackdown and Quantum Break.
