Elite: Dangerous takes Pluto accuracy very seriously

It’s cool that we now have high resolution images of Pluto and its moon Charon, but what does it mean for video games? For Elite: Dangerous, it means a remapping of the Pluto surface and updates to the planet (I’ll always remember it as a planet and you can’t take that away from me) and its moon in game.

Showing the level of attention to detail that makes Elite: Dangerous such an all consuming simulation, Frontier Developments has posted in their newsletter a detailed explanation of how the Pluto findings will affect their depiction of Pluto in game, going so far as to defend their own interpretation of the planet surface based on volcanic activity expected to take place over the next 1300 years between modern day and when Elite: Dangerous is set. When NASA release more detailed information about the surface of Pluto the developers will take on board this data and make sure the version of Pluto in Elite: Dangerous is as accurate to real life as possible.

Elite: Dangerous is currently out in game preview for Xbox One and full release for PC.
