David Cross: Destiny could have been funny

Destiny is a game that (dance emotes aside) takes itself very seriously. The fate of the world is in your (and millions of other players) hands, Guardian. There is no time for jokes and no room for laughter. According to actor and comedian David Cross, who spoke with IGN last week, that was not always the case.

The Mr. Show and Arrested Development star discussed how he and fellow comedian Brian Posehn were brought in by Bungie to write lines for Ghost, the personality devoid robot companion infamously voiced by Peter Dinklage. None of their material was used, but a witty AI companion (or just one with any personality) would have made some difference in the sterile narrative of Destiny. The formula worked well for Bungie with Master Chief and Cortana in the Halo series, but Cross could give no insight as to why their work was never used.

I would love to know why Bungie opted for the exact opposite approach with the retail release of Destiny, going so far as to remove the only source of humour (and memes) from their beta. A few jokes here and there could have made the hours of grinding and repeating missions and strikes ever so slightly more bearable.
