Infinite Crisis shutting down less than six months after launch

Turbine’s DC Comics based MOBA Infinite Crisis will be shut down in August, less than six months after launch. Customers who purchased either the Starter Pack or Elite Pack will be entitled to a full refund, and the game will be free-to-play for all until the closure on 14 August. A short statement on the official website has all the details.

It isn’t hard to read between the lines that Infinite Crisis was a massive commercial failure. After two years of open and closed beta, for a game to be shuttered within six months of launch despite a well known and beloved property like DC Comics attached to it, its financial performance must have been dismal.

The MOBA market increasingly feels like the post World of Warcraft monthly subscription MMO scene, where a lot of imitators attempt to carve out a corner of the market but the original game is so ubiquitous that it drowns out all competitors. League of Legends and Dota 2 are stiff, well supported competition and it looks like it will take more than just a popular license to compete with them.

If you want to see what could have been, Infinite Crisis will be available free until 14 August.
