Gears of War will continue to offer split-screen co-op, unlike Halo

While Halo is going against its time-honoured tradition of split-screen co-op in Halo 5: Guardians, it appears that Gears of War is staying true to its roots.

In conversation with Stevivor, The Coalition’s Creative Director, Chuck Osieja, confirmed that Gears of War: Ultimate Edition will indeed allow two friends to partner up on a couch and play together as Marcus and Dom.

The Coalition is working on both Gears of War: Ultimate Edition and the Gears of War 4.

When pressed, Osieja wasn’t able to confirm that split-screen will also feature in next year’s Gears of War 4, instead offering up the usual, “we’re focusing on Ultimate Edition at this time” line. That said, he didn’t reject the notion that Gears 4 will support split-screen play with the game’s two new protagonists, Kate and JD.

343 Industries confirmed ahead of E3 that Halo 5: Guardians will drop split-screen in favour of online co-op for up to four players.

We’ll find out more about Gears of War 4 in the coming months, and hopefully will have some (official) good news for couch co-op enthusiasts out there.
