Black Mesa is counting down, but to what?

If there is one thing gamers love it is countdowns, the more mysterious the better. Black Mesa, the mod turned full release that brings Valve’s original Half-Life to the updated Source engine, has nailed both the mystery and countdown aspects as the yet to be released project is hosting a very mysterious video timer on their site, counting down to 5 May in the US, 6 May in Australia.

That date is significant in the Half-Life universe as the date protagonist Gordon Freeman started working at the Black Mesa Research Facility. It seems unlikely that is a coincidence, but what they are actually counting down to is still unknown. The final release of the project is the short priced favourite, it is over two years since the first part of the mod was released.

We’ll find out for sure in about one and a half days, in the meantime enjoy the countdown clock, complete with eerie cameos by the G-Man and memories of test patterns.
