DICE: Battlefront is more than Battlefield DLC; being built from the ground up

At Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim this weekend, Stevivor had the opportunity to chat with DICE producer Craig McLeod about Star Wars: Battlefront.

Being that Battlefront is being developed by DICE, is focused on multiplayer and uses the Frostbite engine it was a little concerning that like the recently released Battlefield: Hardline, Battlefront would feel like Battlefield DLC, swapping cops and robbers for Star Wars.

When I asked McLeod about this, he said, “The important thing to say here is that we really have built it from the ground up. We’ve taken the ambition from a multiplayer sandbox shooter which has been incredibly successful, and applied that to the idea of creating your own Star Wars battle fantasies. We’ve started anew and while we’ve taken some things from Battlefield, it’s definitely not the same game. It will be incredibly clear as we move forward just how different it is.”

While it’s clear from what we’ve seen thus far that the DNA of Battlefield is most certainly contained with Battlefront, it does appear to be a different beast thus far. The new features and new technology used to create the title along with the Star Wars licensing goes a long way to drive home the difference between this and Battlefield.

“Features such as being able to share unlocks, first and 3rd person views, stepping into the shoes of these incredibly powerful characters are all unique to Battlefront and help to enhance that,” McLeod continues, “When you couple that with the collaboration we’ve had with Lucas and the access they’ve given us to the archives, the photogrammetry, PBR and visits to the original set locations you get this incredibly authentic universe.”

So far, so good. Let’s hope that Battlefront continues to forge its own path and truly separates itself from what has come before.

Star Wars: Battlefront will be available for PC, PS4 and Xbox One on 17 November 2015.
